Tasmanian Leatherwood Honey

Leatherwood (Eucryphia lucida) is a rainforest tree found only in Tasmania. It grows in the cool, wet forests of the island’s west, where high rainfall and rare bushfires let it flourish among moss and lichen. In summer, its branches fill with white, honey-scented flowers.

Tasmania lies in the path of the Roaring Forties, the strong westerly winds that circle the globe at around 42 degrees south. They carry moist air in from the Southern Ocean and drop much of it as rain on the west coast, watering the rainforest where leatherwood grows.

The flowers last for only a few weeks of summer, usually between January and March, so the honey can only be gathered while the blossoms are out.

That’s when our bees get to work. They forage among these ancient trees in Tasmania’s west coast wilderness, gathering nectar you won’t find anywhere else.

The result is a rich, amber honey with a bold floral aroma and a spicy, piquant, complex flavour. It’s one of the most distinctive honeys in the world, and a true taste of the Tasmanian wild.

We’re proud that judges agree. Our Leatherwood won a bronze medal at the 2019 Apimondia World Beekeeping Awards in Montreal, Canada, putting a family apiary from Westbury on the world stage.
